Why Aren’t All Brands Cruelty-Free Yet?

You'll never guess why animal testing still exists, and the women who are standing with the cruelty-free movement.

Remembering when I first heard about animal testing, I was in high school and I couldn’t believe it! Since it’s public knowledge, I assumed that these practices had stopped by now. To my horrific surprise, that’s not the case. This made me wonder why these companies are still testing on animals. You’ll never guess what I found out. Luckily in my search, I found some cutting-edge cruelty-free brands that I can’t wait to share with you below.

I was happy to find that the Food Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t require makeup companies to test their products on animals. What came as a surprise to me is that animal testing is required for any brand to be able to promote or sell beauty products in China. Did you know a lot of the makeup that is produced in America is sold there? As a result, big brands are still choosing to test their products on animals.

However, this isn’t the fault of the Chinese people. The fault is with greed. Many makeup companies would lose a large number of their profits if they stopped selling in China. To them, animal testing is the only option, I know differently. People like Halsey and Qveen Herby have created solutions that make animal testing obsolete. First, I had to know what types of animal tests still exist.

Cruelty-free

There are three main tests companies perform on animals in order to assess the safety of their products:

  1. The first test examines potential skin and eye irritation.
  2. The second test is a force-feeding test.
  3. The third test is the lethal dose test.

That’s right, the lethal dose test is exactly what it sounds like. It is performed by forcing injections of chemicals into animals until they die. For the sake of these animals, it can make you hope they get the lethal dosage on the first try. Is it worth it, just to achieve the perfect lipstick shade? I think not!

Cruelty-Free Brands are On The Rise

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives to animal testing that are available to makeup companies. There are currently 50 different types of non-animal tests that are approved by the FDA, with more on the way.

The best part? These alternatives are more cost-effective and provide more helpful information to the general public on safety concerns. This leads to happier consumers which, in turn, leads to more profit for the businesses.

Makeup companies aren’t the only ones who can do something to help stop the use of animal testing. You can too. Each time you make a purchase you are casting your vote for what type of testing you condone. It’s just that simple. If there is no demand for products that use animal testing, there will be no reason for companies to supply them. Here are two amazing celebrities that have their own makeup brands that are cruelty-free. Two celebrities I would cast my vote for any day.

Halsey Launches About-Face, 100% Vegan and Cruelty-Free

Halsey has her own makeup brand that’s featured on the list of cruelty-free brands. About-Face is 100% vegan and cruelty-free.

Two-time Grammy Award nominee, Halsey, has her own makeup brand that’s featured on the list of cruelty-free brands. Her brand, About-Face is 100% vegan and cruelty-free.

Inspired by and for our diverse and artistic community, we create makeup with integrity and intention, for all stages of life.

Halsey says On the About-Face website

These products were designed to help you express yourself, not conceal yourself. This is why there aren’t any foundations, concealers, or contours on the website. What she does have is amazing cruelty-free face, lip, eye, tool, and even some must have merch. I personally loved the Anti-Valentines Day bundle. If you missed it this February, I’m betting (begging) it will be back. Her exclusive bundles come and go, so I suggest checking AboutFace.com often.

Halsey preaches on embracing our differences, even the weird ones. Doesn’t she do it beautifully? She’s not the only one making strides in the clean beauty movement.

You may be familiar with Halsey’s brand, but did you know that Qveen Herby also has a makeup brand with business partner DJ Audrey Napoleon? They have a makeup and skincare line that uses cruelty-free formulas in their products.

You Have The Power to Make a Change

Always remember, each time you make a purchase you are voting for a product. Sometimes it’s just easier to grab the first thing on the shelf. Especially today, your purchases are making real change. If we take away the demand, we will take away the supply.

Another great way for the public to help is through consumer pressure. Send emails and leave a review to voice your concerns about the makeup companies that still use animal testing. Once they see a drop in their sales from people not buying their products, they’ll quickly make changes.

Your voice needs to be heard! Word of mouth is always a crucial part in invoking change. Inform people who may not be aware of animal testing practices or how cruel they are. Educate them on the makeup companies that are cruelty-free, and encourage them to make the switch.

You can also visit animal-free testing in order to better understand different alternative testing. This website is a collaboration of corporate and non-profit leaders coming together with the same goal of ending animal testing.

Since there are plenty of cruelty-free tests, companies that still use animal testing need to be held accountable. Together, we can eradicate the use of animal testing without sacrificing peace of mind, or trust in the products we use.

Have you already made the switch to a cruelty-free brand and want me to give a shout-out? Feel free to subscribe and share your thoughts below in the comments section, I’d love to hear from you.
