How the Tom Ford Innovation Prize is Helping the World

Will we ever be able to get rid of plastic once and for all? Well, the Tom Ford Innovation Prize may just be what we need to permanently get rid of plastic. Read all about it here, and how you could enter this contest.

Addressing sustainability, and how we can all make this world healthier, has always been at the forefront of this magazine. We also stress the importance of getting influential people involved. So, when a big name announces a plan, partnership, or product that can benefit ourselves and the planet, we have to talk about it. The people whose name holds relevance, power, and the financial means to make a change. That’s why whenever a big name comes forward to be a part of a sustainable future, it’s important to talk about them and what they’re doing to make a difference. One of those people who are using their influence for sustainability is American Fashion Designer and Filmmaker, Tom Ford.

Career Life

Ford got his first start in the fashion industry by calling American Designer, Cathy Hardwick every day for a job at her sportswear company. Then we went to work for Marc Jacobs for about 2 years. Afterward, he decided that in order to become a better designer, he needed to leave America and work with other brands.

In addition, while Gucci was financially struggling, Ford became Gucci’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer. Then he became the creative director of Gucci and Saint Laurent before establishing his own brand.

Innovation Prize

Fast forward to November 19th, 2020. Ford launched his first ocean plastic timepiece aka watch. This is the first for a luxury brand to release a timepiece made from 100% recycled ocean plastic. To stress the importance of ocean health, Ford has partnered with 52HZ.

The purpose of this innovation prize is to come up with a meaningful replacement for thin-film plastic. Every year, 11 million tons of plastic go into the ocean. Every time you buy one of the timepieces in this collection will remove the equivalent of 35 plastic bottles from the ocean. All packaging is also recyclable.

The End Result?

As a result, the person who comes up with the best replacement will win $1.2 million as decided by a panel of judges in the industry. Once the winners are decided, their products will go through testing to make sure it has a positive impact on the environment and to make sure that it’s ready for the market by 2025.

In Partnership with 52HZ

Ford has partnered with 52HZ for this innovation prize. 52HZ is a company whose name is dedicated to the world’s loneliest whale, known as the 52-hertz whale.

World’s Loneliest Whale

This is the loneliest whale in the world due to his call registering at a frequency of 52 hertz. This register is too high for any other whale species to hear him. The whale can hear the others, but they can’t hear him back. Being the only one of his kind left, his species remains unidentified.
